Down items are used to provide lightweight insulation to keep you warm. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between the filaments and heated by body heat to insulate the user.

Dirt and body oils build up in down items through use. This affects both the fabric and the down filling. Dirt attracts water; if the fabric absorbs water, rain and condensation can easily get into the down. When down gets wet, it clumps together. If your down equipment is relatively new, or has recently been treated with Nikwax Down Proof, cleaning with Nikwax Down Wash Direct® will not only remove dirt, sweat and detergent residue, but also revitalize the insulation and restore DWR.

However, if the equipment has been thoroughly used, you will need to re-add the DWR with Nikwax Down Proof, after first cleaning the equipment with Nikwax Down Wash Direct. This adds DWR to the outer fabric of the equipment and also to the down filling.
